Cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, which is located behind the pupil. This is a natural process that occurs in everyone sooner or later. Eye injuries, inflammations and cortisone treatments can promote the development of cataract.
Cataracts are manifested by foggy vision and a deterioration of visual acuity. However, light sensitivity, color vision disturbances or changes in spectacle value may also occur.
The only treatment for cataract is surgery, it cannot be treated with eye drops or laser. This is a short outpatient procedure.
The cataract only needs to be operated on if the patient feels disturbed and there is no time pressure. In rare exceptions there are also reasons for a quick operation. For example, in case of loss of fitness to drive or an impending outflow of aqueous humor through the thickened lens, which can lead to acute pressure increases in the eye.
