Strabismus clarification in children

Strabismus can be congenital or occur, for example, due to a refractive error of the eyes (often farsightedness = hyperopia). Syndromal diseases or diseases in the head can also lead to strabismus in a child. The classification of a strabismus is important so that an appropriate therapy can be initiated.

Our strabismus assessments are tailored to the age of the child and are conducted in a playful manner. This is the best way to get the children to cooperate.

We check depending on the issue:

  • eye movements
  • binocular vision (spatial vision/stereopsis)
  • the fixation behavior, visual behavior
  • the pupil reaction
  • the anterior and posterior segments of the eye
  • refraction (assessment of whether a child is farsighted, nearsighted or has astigmatism)
  • visual acuity (possible from the age of 2-2.5 years)

For accurate evaluation of the back of the eye/accurate determination of refraction, we must administer pupil dilating/cycloplegic eye drops. Cycloplegia is a short-term paralysis of the accommodation of the eye. Depending on the problem, the child receives a drop in each eye once or twice. We have a lot of experience in the administration of these eye drops.
