Visual rehabilitation after cataract surgery

If left untreated, a congenital cataract causes a very severe visual development deficit. Therefore, a cloudy eye lens must be surgically removed quickly. After cataract surgery, intensive treatment begins for many years. If the eye remains lens-free after surgery, either contact lens fitting must be performed or the baby/toddler receives cataract glasses.

The exact determination of the contact lens or spectacle power is elementary important for the therapy, because the ability to focus is no longer present (accommodation). Since the eye is still growing in the first years of life, the contact lens or spectacle values must be checked again and again and adjusted accordingly. A congenital cataract can occur in both eyes or only in one eye. In case of unilateral cataract, intensive covering therapy (occlusion) must be performed immediately after surgery, which requires a lot of discipline and perseverance for a family. We consider a trustful support of the family as an important part for the success of the therapy.

We have great experience in visual rehabilitation of cataract operated children. We regularly practice the determination of contact lens and spectacle values. We attach great importance to close cooperation with our colleagues in anterior segment surgery, contact lens specialists, pediatric low-vision optometrists and low-vision trainers.
